the 2024 season
We just completed the 2024 Jamison Cup. The format was revised last year to the old guys vs the young guns. We had everyone sign up. At the end, we had 70 guys play so the 35 oldest guys played against the 35 youngest guys in a Ryder Cup style match.
We played no handicap and for the most part, we all played the same tees. We did have an allowance for some of the older/oldest guys getting a tee advantage but mostly, the same tees were played.
When we added up the handicaps, the young guys had a 35 stroke advantage on us old fellows and with how far they hit it, it showed. Some of these young guys can downright kill it. I got the pleasure of playing with 4-5 great young men who can really move the golf ball. On Saturday, I played with Chris Teachout and we started on 15. On his opening drive he was about 10 yards short of the green on 15 then knocked it on 16 in two to start birdie/birdie on me. Today I played with Blake Urbano. On number 12, from behind the water he hit 3 wood/4 iron onto the green for an easy 2 putt birdie. Both Chris and Blake drove the 13th green for 2 putt birdies. Its fun to watch – unless you have to play against it. !!
But, after a great first day by the old men with a 91-1/2 to 64-1/2 point lead, we followed it up with an 84-64 point win on Sunday to have a 175-1/2 to 128-1/2 point finish in favor of the guys at 58 years plus !! I think there is some truth in the old cliché of wisdom of the old prevails. Maybe its just that we know our time is coming so we need to embrace every opportunity we have to maintain our manliness while the young guys know time is on their side. Regardless – the old guys hold the trophy for another year !!
Dan Drane was the baby on the old team at 58 years old. He is about a month older than Stevie G (Giampietro) also at 58 but a month on the wrong side of winning !!!
The winner as always is the FMMGA and its members. We had a weekend full of absolute perfect conditions with weather and with course conditions. It was perfect. All participants acted as gentlemen and fellowship was the true winner this weekend !!
Huge shout out to Ashley Patterson and his crew for always giving us a championship golf course and conditions. Huge thanks to Dennis Rysz on all his help with setting up tee times, Shot gun starts and scoring. Dennis is a blessing to our golf course. I hope we all appreciate him. Also thanks to Anita, Carol and the whole food and beverage staff for great meals and keeping us hydrated on the 19th hole !!!
Congrats to Captain Chris Teachout for being a gracious captain in defeat and also for setting some very “interesting” pin placements.
Thank you Captain Gregg Ferrell for your leadership and great inspiration and pairings to move us to a win !!
